GHANA JOBS Laboratory Technician

JOB PURPOSE
To supports Laboratory staff by maintaining glassware; maintaining logs and record books; trouble shooting and resolving problems; helping with special projects. Ensuring thorough testing of raw sewerage, faecal sludge, plant effluent to meet established EPA quality standards, ensuring proper operation of laboratory equipment, calibration of laboratory instrument, preparation and standardization of solutions and reagents, conducting laboratory tests and analysing test results of appropriate samples and advising the Process team appropriately and timely for necessary corrective action.
REPORTS TO:          Head of Lab. Quality Control and Research
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains glassware by picking-up, cleaning, washing, sterilizing and storage.
Provides glassware by ordering, receiving, and inventorying glassware.
Maintain inventory of chemicals and materials required for continuous sample testing and prepare requisitions for additional supplies needed.
Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, calling for repairs on laboratory instruments.
Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.
Enhances laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Would also be conducting daily analytical checks of the waste water parameters as; BOD, COD, DO, TDS, TSS, and other parameters required of the section.
Ensuring effluent quality meets regulatory requirements.
Conducting Statistical Process Control on Plant processes and equipment.
Calibration of laboratory equipment and maintaining equipment/calibration register.
Any other duty that may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Required Skills or Experience

HND in any of the following areas as: Laboratory technology, Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized university. However, a first degree in a relevant area could also be considered. 
At least 3-5 years’ experience in water quality and waste water quality management.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Knowledge of: sterilization, equipment calibration, biohazard safety management.
Knowledge of the current regulations and the methods used for sample collection and analysis
Ability to collect data, analyse, interpret and make meaningful suggestions to operations.
Knowledge of laboratory principles, practices and techniques of chemistry, biology and microbiological.
Knowledge of sewage treatment and disposal, industrial wastes, stream pollution or the methods for treating and testing water supply systems, depending on area of assignment.
Knowledge of local and internationally applicable laws and regulations pertaining to water quality, wastewater treatment and data validity.
Skill in laboratory techniques, and in following and adapting scientific methods and procedures.
